Each year, the Science Fair is built around a unique theme, often inspired by significant scientific events, global initiatives, or notable anniversaries occurring around the time of the event.

A highlight of the preparation process is the annual Science Fair Logo Competition, which is open to both students and staff. The wider school community participates in selecting the winning design based on which 3D-printed pins are created.

Science Fair 2026

Science Fair 2026 themed “Hydrosphere & Atmosphere,” celebrated scientific inquiry, creativity, and collaboration. Year 10 students presented experimental investigations based on safe, home-based experiments, supported by formal mini lab reports. Extracurricular projects were also showcased, including the Pollution Detectives club, which collaborated with Malvern College Hong Kong to compare atmospheric pollution data. Year 9 students also confidently presented posters inspired by their scientific blog-writing coursework.

Across the school, teachers and students led interactive experimental stations, including organ dissection, DNA pendant creation, and the popular “Fire on Your Hands” demonstration, alongside cross-departmental activities involving English, Drama, Art, and Geography.

The day concluded with lectures on Medical Physics and Radio Astronomy. A special thank you to Mr Stefan’s PDS group, whose leadership helped make the event a great success.

Science Fair 2025

Science Fair 2025 was a vibrant celebration of scientific curiosity, creativity, and discovery, bringing together students, staff, and visitors for a day of engaging presentations, hands-on experimentation, and inspiring scientific exploration.

The event began with presentations by Year 9 and Year 10 students in the auditorium, where they shared their research and scientific investigations. The excitement then moved to the experimental stations, the highlight of the day for many participants. A total of 16 interactive stations showcased a wide range of scientific phenomena, including Elephant Toothpaste, Flame Tests, Explosion Without Explosives, Screaming Jelly Baby, Cloud Chamber, Organ Dissections, DNA Extraction from Fruits, and Fire Bubbles on Hands.

Students explored the stations, collected stickers, and earned the official Science Fair emblem - a specially designed 3D pin based on the event logo, designed by Laura and brought to life by Anastazja.

The programme continued with engaging scientific lectures and an interactive quiz, providing further opportunities for learning and participation. Throughout the day, students experienced science in action, discovering how scientific principles explain the world around us.

A special thank you goes to Mr Hristo Stefan for leading and coordinating the event. We also extend our gratitude to the editors of the Science Fair Booklet - Maria, Nicola, Janek, Kasia, Leo, and Anya - for their hard work, and to Hania for creating the booklet cover design. Their contributions helped make Science Fair 2025 a memorable and highly successful celebration of science.

Interdisciplinary Learning

One of the most exciting developments in recent years has been the growing involvement of departments beyond Science.

Examples have included:

  • Art & Design projects inspired by Chemistry and Biology
  • Creative scientific writing through English and Drama
  • Geography Department collaboration – Pollution-related experiments
  • Cross-curricular challenges and presentations
  • Interdisciplinary experimental stations combining scientific inquiry with creativity and communication

Looking ahead, our vision is for every department to contribute at least one activity, station, challenge, or learning experience as part of future Science Fairs.

Student Leadership & Agency

Student ownership is at the heart of the Science Fair.

Students take responsibility for:

  • Designing and running experimental stations
  • Leading demonstrations and workshops
  • Organising activities for younger students
  • Supporting visitors and participants throughout the day
  • Creating educational resources and displays

This hands-on involvement develops confidence, leadership, communication, and teamwork skills while allowing students to share their passion for science with others.

Community Partnerships & Global Collaboration

The Science Fair extends beyond our own school community.

Recent initiatives have included:

  • Engagement activities for younger learners
  • Partnerships with our partner school in Hong Kong
  • Opportunities for international exchange of ideas and projects

These connections help students appreciate science as a global and collaborative endeavour.

Learning Journey Throughout the Year

The Science Fair builds on a year of structured scientific inquiry, with Year 9 and Year 10 students completing distinct projects that develop their research, communication, and analytical skills.

The Student-Created Science Fair Booklet

A particularly unique feature of our Science Fair is the annual booklet, produced largely by students.

The publication typically includes:

  • Student-written science mini-articles
  • Project abstracts and research summaries
  • Science puzzles, quizzes, and riddles
  • Home experiments for readers to try safely
  • Event maps and station guides
  • Information about exhibitors and activities

The booklet reflects both the academic and creative dimensions of the event and serves as a lasting record of student achievement.

Lectures, Debates & Challenges

Over the years, the Science Fair has featured a variety of enrichment opportunities, including:

  • Staff interactive lectures and presentations, workshops and demonstrations
  • Scientific debates
  • Quiz competitions
  • STEM challenges

These activities encourage curiosity, critical thinking, and engagement with contemporary scientific issues.
